Leather beds are used to sleep in, some come as sofa beds, some can be an item of furniture in a room and used as a spare bed as and when it’s needed.

Beds are made of many different materials, the best quality beds are made from cow leather and are full grain leather, this makes them very durable and tougher, they don’t go through a normal process of sanding and buffing to bring out an even tone colour.

In 1857, the first steel coil sprung was invented for the bed. In 1871 Heinrich Westphal a German gentleman invents the innerspring mattress, strangely he died in poverty having never profited from his outstanding invention.

Beds invented in the Neolithic period were of goat skin filled with water, but beds began as a pile of straw and leaves covered in animal skin and were slightly lifted off the ground to avoid insects and small animals and drafts.

Beds have come along way since then, even though some believe water beds are a modern invention, they are far from the truth as in 3600 BCE beds filled with water and covered with goat skin were used in Persia.

Leather beds come in many designer styles today.

A lot of leather beds are not actually leather and are made from faux leather and people believe they have a real leather bed until a time comes when the bed starts to break down and the bonded layer on the top surface starts to peel away.

Cats often use the corner of beds as a scratching post and can cause a great deal of damage to them, if they are faux beds it makes them impossible to repair successfully like genuine leather beds.

Beds that are pigmented leather or aniline dyed can be restored or repaired to an almost as good as new condition again, using aniline dyes or pigment paints and colours.

To give you an idea of what faux leather is, it’s manufactured from different materials and does not contain leather, it has a plastic base, this starts off with a synthetic base such as polyester, this material is given an imitation leather coating and look. If you look at the surface of faux leather you will see it’s very even and leather that’s genuine isn’t like that. It can be made from several layers all glued and bonded together to give it structure and the feel of genuine leather. It’s a polyvinyl chloride PVC material or polyurethane.

Faux leather is known by many names, vegan leather, pleather, bonded leather, fake leather and leatherette.

Depending on the type of leather bed you have will determine the type of leather cleaner required to undertake cleaning, pigmented leather can be cleaned with a standard leather cleaner and aniline leathers require to be cleaned with a dedicated aniline leather cleaner.
