While marketed as an eco-friendly and ethical choice, the reality is more complex. As a form of plastic, Veganza raises concerns about long-term environmental impact, making its true sustainability questionable.

What is Veganza?

Veganza is a high-quality synthetic material developed by BMW to replace animal leather. Unlike earlier synthetics, it has an enhanced grain, making it feel even softer while maintaining durability. However, while BMW promotes it as an eco-friendly choice, the truth is that Veganza is still plastic-based, meaning it does not break down naturally.

The Sustainability Myth: The Hidden Environmental Cost

Plastic-Based and Non-Biodegradable

Despite being marketed as an environmentally friendly alternative, Veganza is still a synthetic material, meaning it is derived from plastics and does not degrade naturally like leather. When discarded, it can take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to break down, contributing to landfill waste and microplastic pollution.

CO₂ Emissions vs Leather’s Methane Impact

A common argument against leather is its methane emissions from livestock. However, methane breaks down in the atmosphere within 80–100 years, whereas the CO₂ released from plastic-based materials like Veganza persists for up to 1,000 years. • Has a shorter atmospheric impact compared to synthetic alternatives.

A Double-Edged Sword

Veganza is soft, durable, and stylish, but its environmental impact is far greater than most people realise. While marketed as a sustainable alternative, its plastic-based composition, long-term CO₂ emissions, and lack of biodegradability make it a misleading product. Cleaning and Maintaining Veganza Leather Interiors

BMW’s Veganza leather is a synthetic alternative designed to be durable and low-maintenance, but it still requires proper care to prevent cracking, peeling, and premature wear. Unlike genuine leather, Veganza does not absorb moisture or develop a patina over time, so regular upkeep is essential to maintain its appearance.

1. Regular Cleaning

• Wipe down Veganza surfaces with a soft bamboo cloth or bamboo pad to remove dust and dirt.
• Use a mild soap solution (such as diluted pH-neutral cleaner) for deeper cleaning.
• Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals, as these can degrade the synthetic coating.

2. Preventing Cracks and Peeling

• Unlike real leather, Veganza does not absorb conditioning treatments. Avoid using leather balms or oil-based products. Use leather coatings like leather guard.
• Instead, use a synthetic leather protectant designed to keep the surface flexible and resistant to wear.

3. Protecting Against Heat & UV Damage

• Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat can cause Veganza to become brittle and fade.

Important Note:

Unlike natural leather, Veganza cannot be restored once it starts to wear out unlike genuine leather. Some repairs are possible, re colour is also, but care has to be taken to avoid the grain being removed. While proper maintenance can extend its lifespan, it will eventually degrade, requiring replacement rather than refurbishment, meaning its impact on the environment is far greater than genuine leather.
